I didn’t dream of
becoming an archaeologist. Circumstances which I will
mention below propelled me into this line of activity.
Sometimes I jokingly say that I became an archaeologist
out of poverty, but this joke is very near the truth.
Later archaeology became my profession and the
antiquities of Sofia became my destiny. The first digs
in Sofia where I had to work when I was still working on
a day wage at the Archaeology Museum were at the
excavations for the building of the Communist Party
headquarters - with a capital P of course. This is where
my odyssey as a building site archaeologist began. It
concluded at the other end of the largo, where one of
the central underground stations was built. This
encompassed all of thirty-two years, from 1948 to 1980.

UNDER THE PAVEMENTS OF SOFIA |
|
“UNDER THE
PAVEMENTS OF SOFIA” is a documentary series: a story in
photographs and quotes from the archives of Magdalina
Stancheva about notable events and fascinating details from
the discovery of emblematic archaeological sites in Sofia.
“Archaeology as a destiny”: the life and work of a
remarkable academic and an outstanding personality.
The project entitled “Archaeology as a destiny” by the
production studio named “1002 Productions” is a digital
rendering of the personal archives of Senior Associate
Professor Magdalina Stancheva for the website at
magdalinastancheva.net. The archive contains research and
popular science texts and photographs, diaries from
exploratory digs in the centre of Sofia, a hitherto
unpublished autobiography of Magdalina Stancheva, letters
and notes, a series of foreign language publications and a
section on Archaeology for children.
The purpose of this project is to make material from the
archive broadly accessible and to promote the activities of
Magdalina Stancheva.
This project is implemented in cooperation with the New
Bulgarian University and is funded under the “Culture”
programme of the Metropolitan Municipality.
